The famous Fészek Artist Club was established in 1901 by 100 artists previously members of artists’ tables functioning in various cafés all over Budapest. The name of the club (Fészek – ’nest’ in Hungarian) is an acronym created from the initial letters of the names of various types of artists (F – Festők (painters); É – Építészek (architects); S – Szobrászok (sculptors); Z – Zenészek (instrumental musicians); E – Énekesek (singers); K – Komédiások (comedians, i.e., actors). The club is at the corner of Kertész and Dob Streets. It provided a place both for socializing and for presenting the artists’ most recent works. By 1926 the club became the centrum of the artist life of Budapest, having its own bridge and football team. Already that time it was a privilege to become a club member. During the Communist era the club life continued to flourish providing an international and progressive artistic atmosphere, whilst the restaurant inside the building was the most famous and fashionable place, where all the “celebrities” of the socialist time gathered until the early 80-ies. Recently the building was renovated, bringing back the glamour of the past through the most unique and beautiful inside garden restaurant, where you can relax with a glass of wine or a full dinner under ancient chestnut trees, listening to relaxing lounge music or free classical live concerts.
